Earthquake

Concept Explanation

Earthquake

When the lithospheric plates move, the surface of the earth vibrates. The vibrations can travel all round the earth. These vibrations are called earthquakes. The Earth's plate responsible for causing earthquake is the crust of the Earth.

  • The crust of the earth (the planet's outer layer) is made up of several parts, called plates. Oceanic plates are called the plates under the oceans and continental plates are the rest.
  • Because of the motion of a deeper part of the earth (the mantle) that lies underneath the crust, the plates shift about. These plates bump into each other at all times, pulling away from each other or past each other.
